Now here’s something that really grinds my gears. Copying. Whether it be an idea, a design, or something else, I consider it a form of stealing. Some may say that imitation is the finest form of flattery but really by copying another person you are basically showing that you can’t think for yourself.

Being inspired by someone or something is a different thing and I think this can often be confused with copying when due credit isn’t given. For the most part I see the pole community giving credit to each other when they try new and exciting moves on Instagram and I think this is so important in such a small community!

I’ve heard stories in and beyond our community about big companies stealing the ideas of smaller or new businesses and it really makes me sad that the offenders think it’s okay to do that! Starting a business is hard enough as it is without the added stress of worrying if a bigger company is going to steal the ideas you worked so hard to make unique! Do we need to trademark everything we do?

This goes for performing as well. I’d personally be mortified if someone accused me of stealing their idea as I always try to create something completely unique.

I like to think that given we are part of such a tight knit community that people have the decency not to copy the ideas of others but deep down I know that it has happened in the past and is still happening now. Copy cats are out there.
